16/06/2015: US donates K95 million for AIDS fight
Government of United States of America through U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has donated K95 million to Malawi to assist in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
National Coordinator for Safe motherhood, Chimwemwe Chipungu confirmed the development and said he was pleased that the money had come at a time when Government had increased efforts to prevent further infections from the virus.
Chipungu revealed this in an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA) on the sidelines of 25th AU Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“Part of this money will be used in purchasing Ante Retro Viral (ARV) drugs and support various initiatives to fight HIV,” said Chipungu.
In some of its activities, (PEPFAR) reached 289,000 HIV-positive individuals and supported 153,100 orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi by 2011.
It also supports interventions to prevent further spread of HIV and provides care to HIV-positive pregnant mothers in some of its projects in Malawi.
